How Tapni uses Plainly to create personalized videos to boost conversions by over 10%

For this project, our client was Tapni, an innovative company that produces digital business cards equipped with NFC chips. Tapni allows users to share their contact details with a simple tap to make networking simpler than ever. Additionally, they integrate with popular CRM to help users build and manage their contact lists with ease.

Tapni approached us with a specific challenge. Customers designing custom business cards through Tapni’s online designer tool could personalize every detail, including colors, branding, layout, and logo placement. Still, many users abandoned their carts after designing their cards.

To boost conversions, Tapni envisioned creating a personalized video for each user who abandoned the checkout, showcasing the custom card they had designed and enticing them to complete the purchase. But given the number of users they had, producing these manually was… impossible. Without Plainly, that is.

The Goals

Tapni’s primary goal was to increase conversions from customers who had designed their custom cards but hadn’t completed the purchase. The drop-off rate in this stage of the user journey represented a significant opportunity to recapture lost revenue.

Recognizing the power of video as a high-converting medium, Tapni aimed to create engaging, personalized videos showcasing each user’s completed card design. Their goal, however, was to do it efficiently without wasting time or resources.

The Challenges

The first challenge was scalability. With hundreds of thousands of customers designing cards, Tapni couldn’t create videos manually. It simply wasn’t feasible, given the time and resources required. They needed a solution that could automatically handle a high volume of requests without compromising speed or quality.

That said, the second challenge was quality. Since their team relied on Adobe After Effects, the tool they chose had to integrate seamlessly with this industry-standard software to produce videos that were polished and visually appealing.

Finally, Tapni required a tool that was:

  • API-first: To integrate directly with their app.
  • Cloud-based: To ensure reliability and keep up with customer demand.
  • High-speed and efficient: As the conversions directly depended on the timeliness and quality of the videos.

To make the project a success, they needed a tool that ticked all these boxes.

The Solution

And they found it in Plainly. Their team executed the entire workflow self-serve, with Plainly providing support where needed. Using an After Effects template, they integrated Plainly’s API to automate video creation.

The Implementation

The implementation was quick and straightforward.

Here’s how Tapni brought everything together step by step:

  1. Tapni’s team designed a polished After Effects template to showcase the custom card designs.
  2. They integrated Plainly’s API directly into their app.
  3. Whenever a customer designed a card but didn’t purchase it, the app sent the card design data to Plainly via the API.
  4. Plainly rendered personalized videos for each customer automatically.
  5. Completed videos were sent back to Tapni via Webhook, and each customer received an email with their unique video link to entice them to complete their purchase.

The Results

The results of this collaboration exceeded Tapni’s expectations. Namely, post-implementation, they saw a 10% increase in conversions among customers who had abandoned their purchases, proving the videos were a highly effective means of re-engaging past customers.

Moreover, the entire workflow required minimal oversight, making it a “set-and-forget” system that continued delivering results over time.

In the end, the project helped Tapni recover lost revenue. But it also established a scalable and efficient framework that they could use for future campaigns.

Needless to say, Tapni’s team was thrilled with the outcome—and Plainly was proud to play a part in their success.

Working with Plainly was great, their API is robust but simple to set up. After setting up the workflow, we literally forgot about it. The integration with After Effects allowed my team to work with tools they are familiar with and create high-quality video templates that increased the chances of users converting.
